Radio Licensing

Clients must either register and complete the account and licensing process themselves or fill out the attached authorization form, allowing us to handle the licensing on their behalf.

The Portable/Mobile License costs $49.17 per radio per calendar year. To obtain a private frequency, a minimum of three radio licenses will be required.

A radio license is an authorization issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) that permits the operation of one or more wireless devices on designated frequencies. It authorizes the use of specific radio equipment at a specified location or within a designated radius, on assigned frequencies and power levels, along with other technical specifications. Radio licenses typically have a one-year term and are subject to associated fees.

Light Licensing

For many recreational users, including off-road enthusiasts, light licensing offers a simple and affordable way to legally operate radios on designated frequencies. Lightly licensed frequencies are shared channels coordinated by ISED and are intended for lower-volume users who do not require an exclusive private frequency. Vella Radio can assist in determining whether light licensing is appropriate based on operational needs and can provide guidance through the licensing process.
